Sports Illustrated Stadium – April 20, 2025

I was there, doing my job as a photojournalist, and here’s what I saw from my lens and perspective:
It was a night to forget and one of the worst defensive performances by the Red Bulls this season. New York suffered a 1–2 home defeat to a determined D.C. United, who came out aggressively from the first whistle and never let go.

The first half was fully dominated by D.C. United, who could’ve easily been up 0–4 had it not been for the crossbar and poor finishing. João Peglow was unstoppable and caused constant problems for the Red Bulls’ defense, scoring a first-half brace and becoming the nightmare of the backline.

In the second half, New York looked more focused. The defense tightened, the midfield began to link up, and the forwards pushed forward with intent. Their efforts paid off when they scored to pull one back and reignite the crowd’s hope for a comeback.

The Red Bulls’ goal came off a corner:

• Felipe Carballo headed the ball back into the box,
• Emil Forsberg flicked it beautifully,
• and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting fired a powerful shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

It was Choupo-Moting’s fourth goal of the season, and he has now recorded a goal contribution in four consecutive matches at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Key stats:

• Forsberg recorded his second MLS assist this season, and the seventh of his MLS career.
• Carballo also registered his second assist of the year.

Despite the second-half improvements, D.C. United stayed organized, slowed the game down, and their goalkeeper used every excuse to kill time. The Red Bulls ran out of ideas, and their lack of structure ultimately cost them the match.

“We killed ourselves in the first half,” said Head Coach Sandro Schwarz, pointing to poor ball control and defensive organization.
“No one played well today,” added goalkeeper Carlos Coronel. “We all need to take responsibility and improve, both individually and as a team.”

🔴 Mi perspectiva como photojournalist

Estaba ahí, haciendo mi trabajo como photojournalist, y esto fue lo que pude apreciar desde el borde del campo:
Fue una noche para el olvido. De las de peor desempeño defensivo que he presenciado. El NY Red Bulls perdió en casa 1-2 ante un D.C. United agresivo, que llegó desde el arranque con actitud ganadora.

Durante el primer tiempo, el Red Bulls fue completamente dominado. De no ser por el travesaño y la mala puntería rival, el marcador fácilmente pudo haber terminado 0–4. El brasileño João Peglow fue una pesadilla para la defensa local, anotando dos goles que reflejaron el caos defensivo del equipo.

⚽ Goles y momentos clave

En el segundo tiempo, el equipo neoyorquino reaccionó:

• La defensa se mostró más sólida,
• el medio campo comenzó a generar juego,
• y el ataque se animó con más claridad.

El gol del descuento devolvió algo de esperanza a la afición:

• Felipe Carballo cabeceó de regreso al área tras un córner,
• Emil Forsberg desvió con un toque sutil,
• y Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting remató con fuerza, reventando el balón en el travesaño antes de que cruzara la línea.

Choupo-Moting suma ya cuatro goles en la temporada, y ha contribuido ofensivamente en cuatro partidos consecutivos en casa.

📊 Estadísticas destacadas

• Forsberg registró su segunda asistencia de la temporada (séptima en la MLS).
• Carballo también sumó su segunda asistencia del año.

Pese al esfuerzo, el equipo no logró empatar. D.C. United supo manejar el partido, especialmente en los minutos finales, con posesión de balón y retrasando el juego desde su portero. Al Red Bulls le faltaron ideas, orden y conexión en la zona ofensiva.
