INTI RAYMI NY – A Ritual That Lives On in Queens

On May 13, 2025, the cultural organization Inti Raymi NY unveiled its official poster and announced this year’s events in a symbolic ceremony held at the Ginarte firm’s event hall in Corona, Queens. But more than a presentation, it was a sacred moment — one that reconnected everyone present with Pachamama, Mother Earth, in the Andean tradition.

President Patricia Vinueza expressed heartfelt thanks to all who support the festival’s organization year after year. With care and ceremony, she handed out certificates to those who help keep this ancestral ritual alive. Their expressions—some humble, some emotional—spoke of the quiet power behind cultural preservation.

Organization member Luis Conejo added with deep sincerity: “We are here to revive and carry on the traditions of our ancestors. We must teach our children, coexist with all the cultures around us, and leave the gift of heritage for those who come after us. We are only passing through Pachamama.”

As his words lingered, music filled the space. The charangos, guitars, and drums echoed with energy. Musicians in hats, ponchos, and brilliant colors played with passion, channeling the landscapes of their ancestors through every note.

Among the crowd were familiar faces from New York’s Ecuadorian community: activist Antonio Arizaga, cultural advocate Esau Chauca, and Andean music artist Ivan Serrano, each embodying a bridge between generations.

This year’s highlights include:

• June 16 – International Night: Featuring Danza Allpayana, Comunidad Andina, Arcawa (Colombia), Vickow (France), and more.
• June 17 – Gala Night (Kuna Kay): With Danza Allpayana, Hatun, Quichua Marka, among others.
• Additional events: Ecuavoley tournament, Zapateo Night, and community rituals.

For Indigenous peoples across Latin America, Inti Raymi is more than a celebration—it is a living act of memory, gratitude, and unity. It is how they renew their bond with Tayta Inti (Father Sun) and Pachamama, honoring a millennial tradition that calls for balance and respect for all living beings.

These celebrations have taken place in New York for over 30 years. In this urban melting pot, the ritual blooms again—offering mestizos and other descendants of native roots the chance to reconnect. With my camera, I have had the honor of documenting past editions. The energy of the dances, the music, the faces… they make you forget where you are and remind you that we are not above nature—we are part of it. The stars, the rivers, the mountains—they are not just scenery. They are our siblings.

This year, I hope to return and witness the magic again. To capture, through my lens, the spiritual power of this living ritual.

El 13 de mayo de 2025, la organización cultural Inti Raymi NY presentó su afiche oficial y anunció sus festividades en una ceremonia simbólica realizada en los salones de la firma Ginarte, en Corona, Queens. Más que una presentación, fue un momento sagrado: una reconexión profunda con la Pachamama, la Madre Tierra, como dictan las tradiciones andinas.

La presidenta Patricia Vinueza expresó su más sincero agradecimiento a todos quienes apoyan, año tras año, la organización de este festival. Con solemnidad y respeto, entregó diplomas de reconocimiento a quienes mantienen vivo este ritual ancestral. Sus rostros —algunos humildes, otros visiblemente emocionados— reflejaban la fuerza silenciosa que hay detrás de la preservación cultural.

El miembro de la organización, Luis Conejo, expresó con profunda convicción: “Estamos aquí para revivir y continuar las tradiciones de nuestros ancestros. Debemos enseñar a nuestros hijos, convivir con todas las culturas que nos rodean y dejar como regalo este legado a las futuras generaciones. Somos solo pasajeros en la Pachamama.”

Mientras sus palabras quedaban en el aire, la música empezó a llenar el espacio. Charangos, guitarras, tambores… cada nota vibraba con energía. Los músicos, con sombreros, ponchos y colores intensos, parecían invocar la memoria de sus montañas y ríos a través del sonido.

Entre los asistentes se reconocieron rostros conocidos de la comunidad ecuatoriana en Nueva York: el activista comunitario Antonio Arizaga, el gestor cultural Esau Chauca y el artista andino Iván Serrano, todos ellos puentes vivientes entre generaciones.

Los eventos más destacados del año incluyen:

• 16 de junio – Noche Internacional: Con Danza Allpayana, Comunidad Andina, Arcawa (Colombia), Vickow (Francia), entre otros.
• 17 de junio – Noche de Gala (Kuna Kay): Con Danza Allpayana, Hatun, Quichua Marka y más.
• Otros eventos: campeonato de ecuavoley, noche de zapateo y rituales comunitarios.

Para los pueblos indígenas de América Latina, el Inti Raymi es más que una celebración: es un acto vivo de memoria, gratitud y unidad. Es su forma de renovar el vínculo con el Tayta Inti (Padre Sol) y la Pachamama, honrando una tradición milenaria que llama al respeto y al equilibrio con todos los seres vivos.

Estas celebraciones llevan más de 30 años realizándose en Nueva York. En este crisol urbano, el ritual vuelve a florecer y ofrece a mestizos y descendientes de raíces originarias la oportunidad de reconectarse. He tenido el honor de documentar algunas de sus ediciones anteriores. Y cada vez, envuelto en las danzas y melodías, uno recuerda que no estamos por encima de la naturaleza: somos parte de ella. Los astros, los ríos, las montañas… no son solo paisaje. Son nuestros hermanos.

Este año espero volver, cámara en mano, a presenciar la magia una vez más. A capturar, desde el lente, la fuerza espiritual de este ritual que sigue vivo.
