New York City FC asserted their dominance from the opening whistle, capitalizing on a disjointed Club León lineup to take control early. At just seven minutes in, Alonso Martínez pounced on a loose ball from a corner and placed it past the goalkeeper with surgical precision. That early strike set the tone — NYCFC attacked with energy and purpose, while León looked disconnected in midfield and ineffective in the final third.

By the 32nd minute, a swift attacking sequence brought Nicolás Fernández into space, and his cross found Agustín Ojeda, who calmly slotted the ball home. Ojeda’s determination and persistence were rewarded, breaking a year-long goal drought in one of the most emotional moments of the night. The second goal not only secured the lead, but also deflated the spirit of León’s defensive line.

León came out after halftime pressing high, desperate to shift the momentum. Their biggest opportunity came when James Rodríguez stepped up to take a penalty, but Matt Freese, sharp and confident, stretched low and denied the Colombian with a phenomenal one-handed save.

With that decisive moment behind them, NYCFC settled into counterattack mode, controlling the rhythm and generating chances that could have extended the lead even further. Though the scoreboard didn’t change, the team’s attitude and control never wavered.

This 2–0 result marks not just a win, but a statement — a response after the crushing defeat against Puebla. With nearly a full squad on the field, NYCFC showed its identity, discipline, and hunger. Una tarde calurosa y pegajosa en el corazón de agosto fue el escenario perfecto para que NYCFC demostrara que en este torneo aún tiene mucho que decir. Desde el minuto 7, cuando Alonso Martínez interceptó un rebote tras un córner y mandó el balón a las redes, el juego cambió de guion. El equipo visitante quedó aturdido, sin precisión ni coordinación en su salida.

A los 32 minutos, la presión de la casa terminó en la segunda anotación: Nicolás Fernández filtró un pase milimétrico para Agustín Ojeda, quien con una definición de aire frío rompió su larga sequía goleadora. De ahí al descanso era más probable el tercero que el descuento.

En la segunda mitad, los intentos desesperados de León chocaron contra el muro que fue Matt Freese: su atajada al penal lanzado por James Rodríguez fue el momento clave. Ese instante consolidó la ventaja. Mientras, NYCFC apostó al contragolpe y creó varias ocasiones claras, aunque sin aumentar el marcador.
