New York City FC continued its strong start to the 2026 MLS season with a 3–1 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night at Yankee Stadium. The result keeps the Boys in Blue unbeaten and firmly positioned among the leaders of the Eastern Conference.

The final score, however, does not fully reflect how competitive the match actually was. For long stretches both teams battled intensely in midfield, producing a physical and tightly contested game in which tactical organization, defensive errors, and timely substitutions ultimately made the difference.

NYCFC’s victory was largely shaped by the tactical plan implemented by head coach Pascal Jansen and the constant pressure applied by his players across the field. Yet the defining figure of the night was Nicolás Fernández Mercau, whose two goals made him the standout performer and one of the club’s early leading scorers this season.

The opening goal arrived in the 21st minute during a moment of relentless pressure by the home side. Inside the penalty area, Fernández Mercau received the ball and fired an initial shot that was partially blocked by Rapids goalkeeper Nico Hansen. The rebound fell kindly back to the Argentine attacker, who calmly placed a second attempt past the keeper and into the net to give NYCFC the lead.

The second goal was a moment of pure individual brilliance. In the 44th minute, Fernández stepped up to take a free kick from the left side. His delivery sailed past the defensive wall and through a crowded group of players before slipping past Hansen, who remained almost frozen as the ball crossed the goal line. The trajectory of the ball appeared to bend slightly along its path, deceiving the goalkeeper and leaving him unable to react.

Colorado Rapids responded just before halftime. Deep into stoppage time of the first half, Darren Yapi received a well-timed pass inside the box and struck a powerful shot past NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese to cut the deficit to 2–1.

In the second half the Rapids pushed their lines forward in search of an equalizer. The visitors increased their pressure and applied aggressive marking on NYCFC’s attacking players, making the game increasingly physical. The intensity of the match was evident as players such as Keaton Parks and Agustín Ojeda eventually left the field after heavy challenges.

Despite Colorado’s push, the decisive moment arrived late in the match. In the 86th minute, substitute Talles Magno received a perfectly weighted pass from Maxi Moralez and calmly finished to secure the 3–1 victory for New York.

With the win, New York City FC remains unbeaten at the start of the season and continues to sit among the top teams in the Eastern Conference. Attention now turns to next Sunday, March 22, when NYCFC will host Inter Miami — led by Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and company — in what promises to be one of the most anticipated matches of the early MLS campaign.

El New York City FC continúa demostrando un sólido inicio en la temporada 2026 de la MLS tras imponerse 3-1 al Colorado Rapids la noche del sábado en el Yankee Stadium. Con este resultado, el conjunto celeste se mantiene invicto y firme en la parte alta de la Conferencia Este.

El NYCFC, gracias al plan de juego táctico elaborado por su técnico Pascal Jansen y a la presión constante que ejercieron sus pupilos, salió victorioso en un partido cuyo marcador final no refleja completamente lo disputado que fue el encuentro. Durante varios pasajes del partido ambos clubes protagonizaron un duelo intenso, duro y por momentos muy parejo.

La diferencia terminó marcándola el planteamiento táctico del equipo neoyorquino, algunos errores defensivos del rival, los cambios estratégicos desde el banco y, sobre todo, la magia del mejor jugador del partido: Nicolás Fernández Mercau, quien con dos goles se convirtió en la gran figura de la noche.

Transcurría el minuto 21 cuando el NYCFC ejercía presión en todos los sectores del campo. Dentro del área recibió el balón Fernández Mercau. Su primer disparo fue bloqueado a medias por el portero del Rapids, Nico Hansen, quien dejó un rebote peligroso. El propio Fernández reaccionó rápidamente y, con serenidad, colocó el balón a un lado del guardameta para enviar la pelota al fondo de la red y marcar el primer gol del partido.

El segundo tanto fue una obra que solo suele verse en la magia de los grandes cracks. Al minuto 44, Fernández ejecutó un tiro libre desde la banda izquierda. El balón superó la barrera, atravesó un grupo de defensores y sorprendió al portero Hansen, quien quedó prácticamente inmóvil observando cómo la pelota ingresaba en su arco. Fue un gol curioso por la trayectoria del balón, que en su recorrido pareció desviarse ligeramente, engañando por completo al arquero que esperaba interceptarlo.

Cuando ya se jugaban los minutos adicionales del primer tiempo llegó el descuento del Colorado Rapids. Darren Yapi recibió el balón dentro del área sin una marca clara y remató con potencia para vencer al arquero Matt Freese. Con ese marcador de 2-1 ambos equipos se fueron al descanso.

En la segunda mitad, el Colorado Rapids adelantó sus líneas con la intención de encontrar el empate. El conjunto visitante ejerció presión y aplicó un marcaje fuerte sobre los jugadores ofensivos del NYCFC. La intensidad del encuentro se reflejó en la salida por cambio de jugadores como Keaton Parks y Agustín Ojeda, quienes terminaron muy golpeados.

Sin embargo, el destino del partido parecía inclinarse hacia el equipo local. Al minuto 86 llegó el golpe definitivo. Talles Magno, quien había ingresado desde el banco de suplentes, recibió un pase perfecto de Maxi Moralez y definió con tranquilidad para sellar la victoria del NYCFC por 3-1.

Con este triunfo, el New York City FC mantiene su invicto en el inicio de la temporada y continúa entre los líderes de su conferencia. Ahora los hinchas del club esperan con entusiasmo el próximo desafío: el encuentro del 22 de marzo ante el Inter Miami de Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez y compañía, un partido que promete emociones y que será una verdadera prueba para el equipo neoyorquino en su camino por seguir soñando con una nueva corona en la MLS.
