New York City FC hizo respetar su localía y derrotó 2-0 a Santos Laguna de México en un partido muy cerrado, correspondiente a sus primeros compromisos de la Leagues Cup 2026.

Santos Laguna planteó un equipo muy conservador, con líneas compactas y apostando principalmente al contragolpe. Durante el primer tiempo, esa estrategia estuvo cerca de darle resultados, pero el guardameta de NYCFC, Matt Freese, se mantuvo muy concentrado y evitó varias acciones de peligro que pudieron convertirse en goles.

Para la segunda mitad, NYCFC realizó ajustes que rápidamente comenzaron a dar resultado. Apenas habían transcurrido cinco minutos del complemento cuando Tayvon Gray apareció para abrir el marcador y colocar el 1-0.

La anotación obligó al conjunto mexicano a adelantar sus líneas en busca del empate, dejando mayores espacios en defensa. NYCFC aprovechó esa situación y comenzó a generar más oportunidades de peligro.

Al minuto 66 llegó el segundo golpe. Nico Cavallo marcó el 2-0, aumentando la ventaja del equipo neoyorquino y complicando definitivamente las posibilidades de reacción de Santos Laguna.

De ahí en adelante, el esfuerzo del conjunto mexicano fue insuficiente. NYCFC incluso estuvo cerca de convertir un tercer gol, pero la falta de precisión de sus delanteros en los últimos metros evitó que el marcador fuera más amplio.

Con este resultado, New York City FC sumó sus primeros tres puntos en la Leagues Cup y ahora se prepara para enfrentar el próximo domingo 9 de agosto a otro equipo mexicano, Cruz Azul, en un duelo que promete mayor exigencia y una importante presencia de aficionados en las gradas. Mientras tanto, Santos Laguna continuará su participación visitando a Chicago.

Un regreso especial al Sports Illustrated Stadium

En lo personal, fue muy grato regresar nuevamente al Sports Illustrated Stadium y volver a cubrir un partido de un equipo local después de toda la intensidad vivida durante la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2026, donde tuve la oportunidad de cubrir varios encuentros y también la gran final.

Volver a este estadio se sintió, de alguna manera, como volver a casa. Encontrarme nuevamente con rostros conocidos entre compañeros de profesión, fotógrafos, personal del estadio y, por supuesto, con la afición local, hizo que esta jornada tuviera un significado especial.

Después de aquellas semanas tan exigentes durante el Mundial, necesité aproximadamente dos semanas para recuperar completamente mi condición física. Sin embargo, por encima del cansancio y de los momentos difíciles vividos durante esos días, queda la experiencia y la satisfacción de haber dado todo de mí en una cobertura que difícilmente olvidaré.

Ahora, con el ánimo renovado y nuevamente en buenas condiciones físicas, es momento de seguir disparando mi cámara y continuar documentando el fútbol en la MLS y la Leagues Cup, dos competiciones importantes dentro del calendario futbolístico de esta nación.

NYCFC Defends Home Turf with 2-0 Victory Over Santos Laguna

New York City FC made home advantage count with a 2-0 victory over Santos Laguna of Mexico in a tightly contested match during the opening stage of the Leagues Cup 2026.

Santos Laguna approached the match with a conservative game plan, keeping its lines compact and looking to create danger mainly on the counterattack. During the first half, that strategy nearly paid off on several occasions, but NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese remained alert and produced important interventions to keep the match scoreless.

NYCFC came out with greater intensity after halftime, and the adjustments quickly produced results. Just five minutes into the second half, Tayvon Gray found the breakthrough and gave the home side a 1-0 lead.

The goal forced Santos Laguna to push farther forward in search of an equalizer, leaving more space behind its defensive line. NYCFC began to take advantage of those openings and created increasingly dangerous opportunities.

In the 66th minute, Nico Cavallo delivered the second goal of the night, extending NYCFC’s advantage to 2-0 and putting the Mexican side in an even more difficult position.

Cavallo was one of the most influential players on the field. Despite playing as a defender, he was consistently involved in the attack, supported NYCFC’s buildup, and capped his strong performance by scoring the second goal. In my view, he was the best player of the match.

From that point on, Santos Laguna continued to search for a way back into the game, but its efforts were unsuccessful. NYCFC also had opportunities to add a third goal, but a lack of precision in the final third prevented the score from becoming more decisive.

With the victory, New York City FC collected three points and now turns its attention to another matchup against Mexican opposition. On Sunday, August 9, NYCFC will face Cruz Azul in what is expected to be a more demanding contest and a match with a strong atmosphere in the stands. Santos Laguna, meanwhile, will continue its tournament campaign with a visit to Chicago.

A Special Return to Sports Illustrated Stadium

On a personal level, it was especially meaningful to return to Sports Illustrated Stadium and once again cover a local team after the intensity of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where I had the opportunity to photograph several matches, including the final.

Coming back to this stadium felt, in many ways, like coming home. Seeing familiar faces among fellow photographers, members of the media, stadium staff and, of course, the local supporters gave the night a special feeling.

After the demanding weeks of World Cup coverage, I needed close to two weeks to fully recover physically. Beyond the fatigue and the health difficulties I experienced during those days, what remains most strongly is the experience and the satisfaction of knowing that I gave everything I had to that coverage.

Now, with my energy restored and feeling physically strong again, it is time to keep pressing the shutter and continue documenting the game through MLS and the Leagues Cup, two important competitions in the soccer landscape of this country.
