New York City FC celebrated Star Wars Day with a hard-fought 1–0 win over FC Cincinnati. But beyond the scoreline, this match was a battle under stormy skies—on the pitch and behind the lens.

As a photojournalist standing inches from the sideline, I felt the raw tension of this clash from the first whistle. Julián Fernández’s early strike in the 9th minute briefly hinted at an easy afternoon for NYCFC. The crowd roared. The camera shutters clicked. And for a moment, it felt like City would cruise.

But when Alonso Martínez missed a penalty just five minutes later, the story changed. Cincinnati regained composure and nearly equalized before halftime, bringing urgency and grit to every attack. The downpour that followed wasn’t just weather—it became part of the narrative. Each frame I captured was soaked in rain and resilience.

The second half brought a different tone. Less flair, more friction. Midfield battles intensified, and NYCFC focused on protecting their lead. Thiago Martins stood out—his tackles and blocks turning him into the quiet hero of the night.

This wasn’t just another MLS game—it was a test of character. For the players, the fans, and yes, for us photographers too. The rain didn’t care about exposure settings or autofocus. But it did add drama to every shot and made each image feel earned.

NYCFC’s win, their second consecutive 1-0 result, pushes them to 7th place in the Eastern Conference. But challenges loom. A packed schedule ahead and the big New York Derby against the Red Bulls on May 17 are just around the corner.

As for us on the sidelines, we’ll be there—gear wrapped in plastic, boots soaked, eyes fixed on the game.

El NYCFC celebró el Día de Star Wars con una dura victoria 1–0 ante el FC Cincinnati. Pero más allá del marcador, este fue un partido librado bajo cielos tormentosos—en la cancha y desde el lente.

Como fotoperiodista a centímetros del campo, sentí la tensión desde el primer minuto. El gol tempranero de Julián Fernández a los 9’ auguraba una tarde tranquila para el City. El público rugió. Las cámaras dispararon. Todo parecía ir por buen camino.

Pero el penal fallado por Alonso Martínez poco después cambió el guión. Cincinnati se llenó de ánimo y terminó la primera parte generando peligro. La lluvia intensa que llegó después del descanso no fue un obstáculo, sino un nuevo protagonista. Cada imagen capturada traía agua y emoción.

La segunda mitad fue más trabada. El juego se centró en el medio campo, y NYCFC se dedicó a cuidar su ventaja. Thiago Martins fue clave—sacrificio puro en defensa, convirtiéndose en el héroe silencioso.
